Artist Statement
March 2023
During times of uncertainly and unrest, my natural inclination is to worry, fall into survival mode, and hide! I’m confounded by all the divisions, feuds, and hatred that pervades this country. Nonetheless, I have an abiding faith that most people have good intentions. We understand hate is destructive and love is a universal language. I believe art is a means for bringing us together to share our common humanity. I’m wired to communicate and express through art. As a result, my creative process has recently been based upon picking through the pieces of the simple pleasures in life, drawing from past experiences and lasting impressions over the years that have provided lessons forward, harbingers for a more promising future, and forging pathways forward. Recent work includes images of friends and family, current and past places of residence, venues of work and play, and the abundant beauty in nature. All have brought meaning and joy to an otherwise mundane existence. The result has been art that’s become an exercise in gratitude for all the blessings of this life. So much to be thankful for, despite the turmoil, despite the odds. So much to share. I do believe Art will continue to unite us and survive. We will survive these times as well.
