"Where Waters End" Wei-Ting Chuang’s Art Journey at the Firehouse Arts Center Lobby (1F)

  • Firehouse Arts Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

EXHIBITION DATES: January 10 – February 28, 2026

RECEPTION: Saturday, February 14, 2026, from 12:00–2:00 P.M.

The Firehouse Arts Center is excited to present the solo exhibition, “Where Waters End: Wei-Ting Chuang’s Art Journey.” Featuring nearly 20 works by the artist, this presentation includes the artist’s signature works of East Asian brushwork, ink, and pigment on paper. Using traditional techniques, Chuang reimagines contemporary Californian landscapes into ink portraits reminiscent of Tang Dynasty classics.

About Wei-Ting Chuang

Wei-Ting Chuang is an artist specializing in traditional East Asian brush painting and calligraphy. Her artistic journey is deeply rooted in the philosophy expressed by Tang Dynasty artist Zhang Zao: “The artist, inspired by nature’s wonders, creatively transforms them through their imagination into a unique masterpiece, capturing the essence of the human spirit.” This belief resonates in Chuang’s work, as she draws inspiration from everyday life, transforming passing moments into expressive brushwork and thoughtful compositions.

Since moving to California in 2017, her art has been profoundly influenced by the state’s stunning landscapes and diverse culture. Plein air painting plays a vital role in her creative process, allowing her to capture nature’s transient beauty with authenticity. She carefully selects mediums such as ink, watercolor, or mixed media. With a Master of Fine Arts from National Taiwan Normal University, Chuang has taught East Asian brush painting, watercolor, sketching, design, and calligraphy for over 20 years. She continues to share her passion for art through both online and in-person classes in the San Francisco Bay Area, including Pleasanton, Livermore, San Ramon, and Berkeley. Her work has been exhibited in solo shows in both Taiwan and the United States, and she has received numerous awards. Teaching is as rewarding to her as creating art, as her students continually inspire her and demonstrate the endless possibilities in artistic expression.

EXHIBITION DATES: January 17 – March 14, 2026

RECEPTION: Saturday, January 31, 2026 from 1:00 – 3:00 P.M.

The Firehouse Arts Center is excited to feature the work of Jean Batchelder on the Nancy Thompson Memorial Wall from January through March 2026. Featuring approximately 15 of the artist’s representative watercolor works, this presentation will include small to medium-format landscapes and still lifes. Utilizing techniques of traditional watercolor, watercolor on yupo paper, and subtractive painting, this presentation demonstrates the artist’s mastery of the medium.

The artist has released the following statement in light of her solo exhibition:

My work is all about my response to nature, whether a misty sunrise or flaming sunset, a rocky cliff or cascading waterfall, flora or fauna. My emotions may lead me to present a realistic rendering of whatever captured my attention, or I may express my impressions using exploration and abstraction. I hope to draw the viewer into the heart of the painting with my integration of light and color.

I am an avid walker and hiker. You may see me in the neighborhoods, on local trails, and at area parks any morning. I often walk alone; it is my meditative time, an opportunity to recharge my introverted psyche. This time prepares me for the day ahead. I absorb the scenes and sounds of the great outdoors. Things that hold my interest get photographed, and I use those photos as references for studio painting. Very often, my watercolor paintings reflect the image realistically. Other times, what caught my attention is more an impression than anything – then I may choose to create a less detailed piece that expresses my emotional response. You will see this in the vineyard paintings that are done with watercolor on yupo paper. Yupo is a polypropylene surface, plastic. Imagine oil on water – painting with watercolors on this surface allows me to let the piece dictate where it needs to go as the pigments interact with each other for impressionistic effects. Lifting pigment back to the white of the surface is simple, and detail can be achieved with rich thicker pigment.

My walks and hikes, and the resulting paintings, are presented in my Morning Walk series. The pieces on display here are but a few of the dozens I have created since moving to Livermore two years ago. I plan to continue adding to the series and will be exhibiting new pieces as opportunities arise.

Convergence of Creativity Awards and Reception

The Shape of Things is a juried exhibition open to all ages 16yrs and older that invites artists to examine the forms, structures, and outlines that define our visual and conceptual world. From literal geometry to abstract patterns, from organic silhouettes to manmade architecture, this show explores how shape serves as both a foundation and a language in artistic expression.

Artists are encouraged to interpret the theme broadly — through formal exploration, metaphor, or narrative. Works may consider how shapes inform perception, identity, space, emotion, or transformation. What does it mean to give form to thought, or to shape something from nothing?

Visual media including painting, drawing, mixed media, print making, sculpture, photography, digital art, textiles, ceramics are represented in this exhibit.

This exhibition seeks to highlight a wide range of approaches — minimalist to maximalist, figurative to abstract — that speak to the enduring power of shape in the creative process.

My work explores the subtle interplay between light, shadow, and form through the use of monochromatic and dichromatic color palettes. In my paper sculptures, I focus on the nuances of light, allowing shadows to carve depth and dimension into each piece. These sculptures are not static; they shift and evolve with the changing position of the light, creating a dynamic experience for the viewer.

Nature’s Rhythm: A Solo Exhibition in Alcohol Inks by Rashmi Rao

  • Dougherty Station Community Arts Center (map)

Nature’s Rhythm: A Solo Exhibition in Alcohol Inks by Rashmi Rao My work is a celebration of Mother Earth—her beauty, her textures, her infinite rhythms. Through alcohol inks, I explore the organic forms, vibrant hues, and delicate patterns that emerge from the natural world. Each piece begins as a fluid, unpredictable movement of color, evolving into landscapes, blossoms, and cosmic impressions that echo the timeless connection between humans and the earth we belong to. The transparency and flow of alcohol inks mirror the way nature itself unfolds—spontaneous, layered, and alive with energy. In working with this medium, I embrace both control and surrender. The inks spread freely, creating textures and pathways that cannot be fully predicted, much like rivers carving valleys, winds shaping dunes, or blossoms opening to the sun. I guide the process with intention, yet I allow the inks to find their own harmony, mirroring the dance between chaos and order that exists in nature. Color is central to my practice. From the golden warmth of sunlit fields to the deep blues of oceans and the radiant hues of blossoms, I use color to capture the emotions evoked by nature’s ever-changing moods. These palettes are not literal translations of place, but rather expressions of what it feels like to be immersed in those moments—the quiet awe of sunrise, the vitality of a blooming garden, the vast stillness of a night sky. This body of work invites viewers to pause, to see not only the surface beauty of the natural world but also the underlying energy and spirit that connect us all. Each artwork is a reminder of the preciousness of our planet and a call to honor the delicate balance that sustains life. At its core, my art is about gratitude—for the colors, textures, and forms that Mother Earth so generously offers, and for the opportunity to translate that wonder into something that can be seen, felt, and shared.

The True Story of Tamara De Lempicka & the Art of Survival" is a visually stunning and sweeping feature documentary that traces the life and survival of the renowned painter through her powerful paintings – from her rise to international stardom in 1920s Paris, to her move to the United States in 1940, fleeing the rise of fascism, and her revival in the current art market. Tamara de Lempicka was the preeminent Art Deco painter, known for her high-gloss sensual nudes and portraits of high society during the Jazz Age. She was marginalized and gained notoriety for her romantic liaisons with her models and her indulgent, decadent lifestyle, but she was so much more. The film follows this remarkable émigrée as she reinvents herself multiple times, looking behind the veneer of the publicity she generated for herself and examining the bisexual Jewish artist who embodied talent, resilience, passion, and the relentless pursuit of artistic freedom. Told through her never-before-seen 8mm home movies and groundbreaking newly-discovered birth and baptism certificates, our film reveals her true name, heritage, and identity for the first time and will change art history.

My artwork and photography are driven by a passion to immortalize the fleeting, awe-inspiring moments that my eyes encounter. Each photograph I take is an attempt to preserve the beauty, emotion, and wonder of the world as I see it—whether it’s the vibrant hues of a sunset, the delicate texture of a dew-kissed leaf, or the raw energy of a bustling city scene. My journey as a photographer began twelve years ago, at a time when I was just starting to explore the art form as a novice. My first camera was a modest bridge camera, equipped with a small sensor that, while limited in technical capability, opened up a world of creative possibilities. With it, I dove headfirst into capturing the splendor of nature—lush forests, serene lakes, and majestic mountains—each frame a reflection of my growing fascination with the natural world. Over the years, my skills and tools have evolved, but my core mission remains unchanged: to share the breathtaking moments I witness, inviting others to experience the same sense of wonder through my lens.

My paintings invite viewers to connect with the mysterious yet familiar creatures that share our world. These animals experience life through a very different sensory lens than us, yet we find common ground through basic emotions and desires. In them, we recognize something deeply human.

A central question in my work is what to show and what to leave out. Our eyes and minds are capable of filling in gaps, and what’s omitted can often say more than what’s depicted. This selective approach to detail stems from my background in animation, where we always strive to reduce movement into its essence -- to clarify the idea. Although my paintings are far from minimalistic - actually they can be chaotic - I aim to convey mood, movement, and meaning using the least amount of visual information necessary.

Through this balance of realism and abstraction, I seek to create compositions that are visually dynamic yet emotionally grounded. My works echo the complexity of the natural world while inviting personal interpretation. I hope you enjoy my work!

Featuring 18 works by the artist, this exhibition will highlight serendipitous interactions between humans and birds. Drawing inspiration from Huber’s walks, bike rides, and paddling adventures, each scene depicts thought-proving moments shared between her human subjects and nature. Huber imagines the delicate moment a bird graces our world by choosing to share our personal space. Her paintings are inspired by personal experience, such as flocks of sandpipers brushing past her kayak, swallows engulfing her bike, or a still and silent egret on a hike. She created this series while exploring the balance of birds and humans with a whimsical and fantastical realism. The artist captures figures, landscapes, and animals in various mediums, such as pen and ink, watercolor, gouache, acrylic, and oil painting. Her website
